Neurology is the branch of medicine concerned with the study and treatment of disorders of the nervous system.

Neurology is the branch of medicine concerned with the study and treatment of disorders of the nervous system. It generally focuses on the brain, spinal cord, peripheral nerves and its surroundings.

Neurology deals with complaints such as headaches, dizziness, stroke and other cerebrovascular conditions, Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson’s Disease and other movement disorders, Alzheimer’s Disease, memory loss, epilepsy and other seizures, spinal cord diseases or speech and language disorders.

Brain, spinal cord and nervous system control various vital functions of the body. When some things in the nervous system start to go wrong, malfunction or stop working, a number of problems may occur in speaking, moving and even breathing. The origins and treatment methods of all these problems are hidden in neurology.

Nervous system consists of two parts;

  • Central nervous system: It consists of the brain and spinal cord.

  • Peripheral nervous system: It includes all nervous structures excluding brain and spinal cord.

Most common signs and symptoms of nervous system disorders are; 

  • Headache

  • Loss of feeling or tingling 

  • Weakness or loss of muscle strength

  • Loss of sight or double vision

  • Memory loss

  • Impaired mental ability

  • Lack of coordination

  • Tremors and seizures

  • Back pain which radiates to the feet, toes, or other parts of the body

  • Other

All these signs and symptoms may vary for each individual and there might be different signs of symptoms of neurological disease other than stated above.
